I am in friendly spirits this morning and that is how I just made a new friend. You know, until today, I had not realized that we actually pick up friends. Yes! same way you walk up to someone in a bar or anywhere and drop a pick up line yeah... we use pick up lines to make friends too... (I digress) So Im standing there considering what to buy to accompany my 10 Oclock tea, when this very beautiful Indian lady joins me at the counter. I turn to gape at her long hair and notice her smooth face and remember my battle with the heat rash infesting my face. She turns to stare back and smiles, giving me that we can be friends look and I smile back with the yes we can look before calculating my next move. A brief pause after the Heys I lean in close and ask with a lot of concern, Pardon my asking but is your name Preeti? I can sense she wants to roll her eyes back and give that sigh of Oh god! not another one, but she decides to humour me and tells me no. (That was what I was waiting for.) Oh Phewks! Thank heavens! I say, looking very relieved and I catch the surprised look on her face. She did not see that one coming. I smile visibly, inwardly celebrating the score. Curiosity gets the best of her and she asks, Why did you ask? Well, this will sound strange but I have a bad history with Indian girls named Preeti. We just have bad blood and cant even be friends. I respond, sounding as much relieved as I can. She laughs, Are you always this crazy? she asks looking rather impressed. Well, I try. Id say I wish I had a few normal days, but I wouldnt know what normal was, if it hit me in the face. I say with shrugged shoulders. I like you, we can be friends. she says handing me her business card, Call me. We can have tea sometime. I smile taking the card, she smiles back and then we turn towards the attendant at the confectionery shop, to find him leaning on the counter with a smug look on his face, looking at me knowingly. My new friend turns and smiles my way again and I smile back.
