I am in no way a doctrinaire. In artistic questions one is always wrong to be too positive. There is so much light and shade which are difficult to express in conversation. Nuance is everything in these matters. It would be a mistake to give a positive interpretation to impressions and ideas which by the very nature of the subject, which provokes them are necessarily vague and shadowy. I am on the side of the ideal and cannot be contented solely with the real. That is approximately all that I can say. Dagnan-Bouveret answering a question in a very grey area way.
