I am in the midst of Advent sermons, as well as taking our church through The Jesus Creed on Wednesday nights. Today Im struck with these thoughts: Joseph was a righteous man, but he gave up that label by trusting God and marrying Mary. He became the kind of man that either fathered a child out of wedlock, or married a girl who cheated on him. Mary would have been seen as an impure woman (thats putting it nicely) by everyone in her town. Jesus would have been seen as a child conceived and born out of wedlock, and therefore unworthy to even enter the parts of the temple reserved for righteous men. Nobody in the Christmas story, from the family of Jesus, to the Shepherds, to the Magi, would have been welcomed into the conservative religious world of 1st Century Judaism. Who are we putting out in the barn in our churches today?
