I am in the process of writing a short family history and came - TopicsExpress

I am in the process of writing a short family history and came across some great Civil War letters that I would like to share. The letter below was written to Martha Moody in November of 1861 by D. P. White. Benjamin Moody, Isaiah Hembree (my 2nd great-grandfather), D.P. White, Henry Tacket, Luet Milford, and many others from the same community served together. The letters show that they also took care of each other and maintained strong ties back to the community, supporting the wives and children back home. Ill share more as I go through several other letters. I embrace the present opportunity of writing you a few lines by consent of your husband. He is not well at the present time. He was taken the same evening he wrote the letter about Mr. Hembree being sick. He has had the chills and fever....I am guarding the corpse of Henry T. Tacket. He died on Saturday last at 2 oclock in the evening. Lute Milford will start home with the corpse this evening at 4 oclock and I will send this letter with him. I am in bad health myself but I look to the time when we will all be well well again....We have marching orders to Manassas.....As my time is short to write, I will close as I will write some to Mrs. Hembree.
