I am interrupting our post-trip euphoria for the second time in one year to give this important diatribe: You can say lots of things about Kevin Plue...so many things! Hed be furious if we listed his flaws publicly, so well leave it at that. But he owns these flaws, and he is who he is. He holds crucial conversations, uncomfortable as they can be, with everyone he meets, but most especially when it comes to educating children and making them successful in school and ultimately in life. The man doesnt hold back. What you will not do, at least not without unleashing me, is question his integrity. Youve never seen in your life (nor will you ever!) a more fearless and effective leader of a high priority high school. He gets up every day and goes to work in a place thats not exactly easy, but is nonetheless a place of which we are proud to be a part. Hes there now- not having been suspended or even with an inkling of trouble awaiting him. The same is not true for Mr. Ferguson, who was given a clear message that its a bad idea for him to be around any children at this point. Kevin holds people accountable and works like a dog, sacrificing more family time than any of you will ever know, to ensure that all kids, despite the hell that some of them endure outside of school, despite poor choices or terrible parenting examples at home, or potentially NO parents at home- that EVERY child can reach his or her potential. You should consider it a privilege if you get to attend a school where hes in charge- he takes care of each child as if they are his own. Just to be clear, not everyone with a teaching license is doing right by children. Shocking, I know. Just because you say youre a fantastic educator does not make it so. And you have met your match if you are one of those teachers at a school where my husband is your boss. I suggest that WBTV check out just a little deeper to see how awesome a year this guy has had.
