I am just reflecting on the response to the Ebola crisis versus the response to the SARS epidemic. SARS also was a new human disease that emerged in China in 2002 and then traveled around the world at the speed of a jet plane according to an article from the DallasNew life. SARS was a disease that could be spread via airborne (coughing and sneezing). It touched 30 countries and hundreds died. I have been searching but have come up empty as to any sort of or discussion of a travel ban from China during that time. The World Health Organization did not recommend a travel ban and the United States did not consider it yet SARS was more easily passed on than Ebola. But now there are many calling for a travel ban from West African countries and people passing around fears and doing a whole lot of unnecessary actions, such as denying college admission consideration to a student who leaves 80 miles away from where the Ebola outbreak has occurred. I wonder does race have anything to do with it? Now the better question is whats race got to do with it? How does race play into peoples perceptions and responses. I wish we would take a moment to learn more and stop being a tool for people to reinforce their stereotypical views.
