I am learning a new language. Probably, not what you would expect though. After photographing and cataloging over 200 pieces Of Arthur Deshaies art, I am beginning to understand his language. I have looked at pieces from the early 1980s thru 2006, some painted in France, Greece, Mexico, Spain, and the USA. Some of his work is divided into 3 categories, Pre-Universe, First Universe, and Second Universe. A genius, he was absorbed with space and science fiction. (Think Carl Sagan with a palette and a paint brush). His idea was that man would destroy the earth and his pre-universe series is dark and mostly in black and white and is the beginning of a new creation, First Universe is the beginning of new planets, and Second Universe is further development. The abstract series is filled with forming new stars, particles, gases, crystals, etc. Sometimes, he includes nearly a paragraph of description on the back of some of them describing in great detail what he has painted. It has taken me quite a while to begin to understand what he was doing. Seems he created a kind of cosmic poetry to accompany his art. It is truly fascinating, and when I ran across pieces without descriptions, I began to find that I could actually compose the descriptions in "his own words", and "through his own eyes." Thus, I have learned a new language, of abstract art and cosmic poetry. Later, I will share some of this poetry with you but tonight I want to share 3 paintings Arthur painted while living in France. These are stunning and beautiful oil pastels. He did a series of 20 or more of these pastels in France.
