I am looking forward to the upcoming series of talks on Greek American music by Meletios Pouliopoulos at the Greek Institute at 1038 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA 02138. A subject dear to my heart as many of you know. The talk on the music traditions of Somervilles old Greek neighborhood, Brickbottom, should be fascinating. This area had been heavily settled by immigrants from Alatsata (Alacati) and other villages of the Smyrna (Izmir) coast of western Turkey (and being the son of a native born Somerville girl of parents from Turkey, this should prove to be exciting): As part of The Greek Institute’s Monday evening lecture series, Mr. Meletios Pouliopoulos, noted Greek-American archivist and historian of Greek music, will present a three-part series on the history of Greek music in America at the Institute at 7:00PM on April 28, May 5, and May 12. In the first session, Mr. Pouliopoulos will provide an overview of Greek music and the recording industry from 1900 to 1960. The second session will focus on the music of the early immigrant Greek community of Brickbottom in Somerville, Massachusetts. In the final session, the crossover of musical influences within the Greek, Armenian, and Turkish communities of New England will be discussed. He will draw from his private collections of videos and recordings of rare performances, field tapes, and interviews. Mr. Pouliopoulos produces the Boston-based radio shows “For the Record: The History of Greek Music” and “Live & Unplugged.” He regularly consults on the programming of Greek music for various organizations. For more information about this series and to register, please contact The Greek Institute at [email protected] or 617-547-4770
