I am lucky enough to live in a rural part of Aberdeenshire and am surrounded by grassy fields, crops and a large Christmas tree plantation. My cottage (affectionately known as The Hovel is tucked in below the old farm house, next to mainly redundant farm buildings, and what was once a flourishing piggery is now falling into rack and ruin. This has, however, encouraged a lot of wildlife to congregate here, and I have bats in the roof of one of the buildings, lots of beautiful birds coming to my feeders and often see foxes, deer and badgers making their way around the area. There are also a couple of feral cats here, Stinky Tom and Shy Girl who I pop a little food out to, to keep them on the premises to help with the rat population. Yesterday I discovered an injured fox in the remains of an old chicken run. We have a fabulous wildlife rescue and rehab centre here in Aberdeenshire, and someone was out within the hour to take the young vixen to a vet. Sadly she didnt make it..... I have wittered on about this situation on my personal page and on my other page What Kayti Did Next so I will not go into details here as it is supposed to be a horse hair page! I was very upset about the wee fox and could not concentrate on jewellery making last night I confess. My eyes have been opened however, to the amount of work this charity does for our wild creatures, and as a thank you for their help I will make some earrings to sell in their charity shop, and also supply some makes for an auction they are planning in the near future. It is the least I can do. Their name is THE NEW ARC and the place is run by Keith and Pauline - I spoke to both of them last night on the phone and they are lovely, warm and funny people who work their socks off to help hurt, injured and abandoned creatures.
