I am not a descendant of slaves. I am descended from human beings who were ENslaved. Growing up it was hard to articulate in history classes why the term slaves bothered me. So I never said anything. Never corrected any teacher or peer/student... rarely even brought it up in casual conversation until college. Referring to people as slaves, instead of enslaved people, further denies their humanity and obscures injustice. This is not just a matter of semantics. Words matter.
