I am not a fan of either of the two candidates for State Superintendent. I am probably voting for Torlakson even though I think he hasnt done much with position....but I have to give Marshall Tuck credit for making a funny advertisement. I am not one to take political advice from the Hollywood in-crowd, but these guys killed it. I do not like Tuck because of his position on the Vergara lawsuit which would end the due process protections that teachers have. I do not believe the courts are the right place to fix the problems with the current system. A real leader would identify the problems and offer his own solution and work to build a consensus around those ideas. Neither Tuck or Torlakson are doing that. Torlakson is tied to the status quo (for union support) and Tuck supports the lawsuit (for business support). The primary issue that Vergara seeks to address is what happened when economic crash forced mass lay-offs and the newest teachers were pushed out without any consideration of teacher quality. A legislative solution could be that in times of economic stress, districts can release a set percentage of teachers (say 10%) of the total released that have had multiple bad reviews within the preceding 3 years; the other 90% would still be laid off based on first in, first out rules. That would still be a controversial idea but it would seek to address the real issue instead of attempting to throw out the whole system because a few high quality young teachers got screwed by the bad economy.
