I am not clear why anyone would have thought differently about this. It seems humans have a need to think they are more different than they really are from non-human animals. Perhaps to justify extremely bad behavior toward, and exploitation of, these animals and their environment. I would posit that it is much more productive and adaptive to think of non-humans as people. As apparently many North American native peoples did. It is much closer to the truth.
