I am not one for long facebook statuses, but in light of my past - TopicsExpress

I am not one for long facebook statuses, but in light of my past two weeks at school, here it goes.. At dinner tonight, a friend of mine asked me a peculiar question. He looked me right in the eyes and said Madeline, do you love yourself? I immediately blushed and for a few seconds did not have the slightest idea on how to reply. I have struggled my whole life with the concept of validation...from my friends, teachers, parents, grades, musical influences, you name it. The desire to impress, to please, and to be a part of something bigger than myself has overwhelmed me to the point of anxiety attacks and self degradation on more occasions than Id like to admit. That being said, I am not writing this post to talk about my own self-image struggles. I think one of the most universal truths that every human on this planet can attest to is pain. We feel it physically, of course, but I am talking about the real heart-wrenching, gut-punching pain of loss, disappointment, anger, betrayal, and so on; there is no denying that we all have our own burdens to bear. As most of us have come to learn in our short time on this beautiful earth, there are very few guarantees in life. Flesh, health, fame, wealth, talent, intelligence, even things as invaluable as family and friends are gifts that we often take for granted until its too late. This brings me back to my rather long-winded point, which is, that above all things, love yourself. I know it may sound odd in a culture such as ours, where social-awarness can often cast self-worth in a fairly pretentious and selfish light. Life - and, unfortunately, often times other people - do more than enough wear and tear on the flesh. Stay true to your self, your soul, your light. If you have read to this point, or even if you havent, you are beautiful, capable and most importantly you are you. My feet may be tired, but my soul is rested.
