I am not sharing in the Your Choice mania that many other Vegan Outreach leafleters are caught up in. This has nothing to do with my feelings about Ryan Gosling, honest. My concern is that the booklet, designed after the short lived Something Better booklet of Farm Sanctuary, may be being guided by flawed data. The Humane League labs compared Something Better with Vegan Outreachs Compassionate Choices booklet and reported how well each booklet did in changing recipient students eating behavior. The data was reported in percentage who reported changed eating behavior in the categories of red meat (pork and beef), chicken, fish, dairy and eggs. Lost in presenting the data in percentages is the ability to track if a student who said the booklet, either booklet, moved them to eat less red meat was replacing that empty spot on their plate with animal products that cause more suffering and death per pound like chicken, fish and eggs. Do we really believe that those who stated that they were moved to eat less red meat were replacing it with plant material? Without an answer to the question of what was happening on the individual level this data could be less than useless. When I have asked this of the author in the past the conversation turned to those who eat very little to no red meat, which is not most consumers. Most consumers are moving slightly to moderately away from red meat and onto more bird flesh for health reasons. Does anyone have an honest answer on this?
