I am not sure whether it is the comfort of the venue where I watched X-Men DotFP (hey, high-streets ATMOS baby!) that made me, unconditionally, accept the flaw of the movie or it could be the idea that sheeez, I spent a hefty amount for a ticket and I had to enjoy it realisation. XMDofTP had its flaws, no doubt about it; The major re-haul of one of my most favourite story arc in the comics - you know where wolverine never really played a vital role in the original arc (goddammit! It was Kitty Pryde who went back in time...give Ellen Page the much needed break!) or it should be a senatorial assassination and not of an *inserted* character because of the directors obsession with GOT (but I had to hand it to him..he is a BIG actor in a small body..brilliant indeed!) or the original DotFP never showed the future after the resolution, giving the readers the liberty to think whether the dystopian future still happened or was it just delayed (it spawned a series of time travelling activities by the supposed son of Jean Grey and Cyclops, Bishop and another by the daughter of Cyclops and Jean Grey while in her Dark Phoenix state, Rachel Summers). The story arc in the graphic novel version is ambiguous and full of what-ifs that it gave birth to a number of multi-verse, arcs and possibilities. But enough of the nerdy stuff...whew! The movie was fairly enjoyable but Singers direction and his effort in bending it to his will felt a little bit convoluted and a bit scattered. Though some brilliance stood out, other actors were just waiting for what to happen next which made them a bit redundant and forgettable, read: Warpath, Ice Man and Colossus. But when action do happen - Singer brought the showcase of power to a whole new spectacular level. The fight sequences felt appropriately HUGE and it kept the audience (comic nerds and movie newbies) engaged and involved. It may have taken the movie time to tie in to the theme of X-Men (it is, after all, a graphic novel created to address philosophical conflicts and racism) but it eventually got there. The main actors were brilliant. James McAvoy managed to sell the Professor X character so well, Michael Fassbender...he brings a whole new depth to Magneto that is both believable and compelling, and Jennifer Lawrence is a better mystique than the 1 dimensional Rebecca Romjin-Stamos, whose Mystique felt like a vain supermodel instead of a murderous and conflicted shape shifter/assasin who is driven by her belief that her intentions were good (FYI: Mystique is LESBIAN and she married her long-time partner and girlfriend, a mutant called Destiny and adopted a child who will grow up to be Rogue). I cant say anything about Hugh Jackman...well aside from the fact that he is still dreamy at his age, HE IS WOLVERINE and has already proven that after four franchises and two stand-alone origins. Well..enough for now, hope you enjoyed the movie as much as I did. Spoiler alert - yes...the next X-Men will have apocalypse as the adversary (and I seriously wish he completes all his horsemen including Dr. Doom and Archangel, that will be a treat to look forward to!)
