I am one of those many baseball fans who want to believe in the Mariners, but they are making it awfully hard to be loyal after so many exasperating, disappointing losses again this season. Karen and I, who live on a fixed income, were buoyed by Raoul and the young guys coming on before the All-Star Break, but after that they lost all six games we attended, three of them were Felix’s. I take turns getting angry at the ownership, who are not baseball men, the hitting coaches, who field .220 hitters, the base coaches for not putting Morales on a diet, the bench coaches who keep playing musical chairs with the bullpen, the players who frequently look like they’re on cruise control. At this point in the season it seems to me there are three things that the Mariners can do well – they can chew, grow facial hair, and sport tattoos. If the Seahawks can act like they’ve won the Super Bowl already, why can’t the M’s play with the same intensity and enthusiasm? I’ve long thought that eight 162-game seasons is just too long to keep cheering for a mediocre team with lots of potential.
