I am only going to chime in once on the controversy of the red versus the white poppy. My intension is simply to state my own beliefs. Not to ensue or invite wall-debates. On my person, I currently wear two red poppies. One on my coat and one on my sweater. I very much appreciate and respect that the red poppy represents my acknowledgment of the lives lost to ensure I have a free country and enjoy the liberties I have today. It is homage to those who gave up their lives for the future of others. To me, there in lies the reason for also supporting the white poppy. They fought in battle, losing their lives to ensure a free country where we could live out our lives in peace as free people. To me, I would happily wear both the red poppy and the white, side by side. We cannot change the past but we can create a different future. Wearing a white poppy will not negate the lives lost. Its only wish is that the past is not repeated.
