I am part of the organization that is starting the sport of Paralympic Bobsled. Some of the athletes are non ambulatory so we need to figure out a way to start the race. Traditionally the athletes push the bobsled and jump in. This is a big adaptive project that we have been working on for the future sport of Paralympic Bobsled. I have been designing a mechanism that has a hand crank which is attached to some torsion springs. The athlete has 30 seconds to crank it than the sled is released and sling shot down the track. The more an athlete cranks, the faster the sled goes.
