I am pleased to tell you that I will be giving photography workshops both in the UK and elsewhere. My project Fearless Lens will provide cameras across the entire region of Africa, Palestine, Kashmir and however far I can reach. Our very own history has been written by other people. It is not a new thing for the history of the indigenous to be written by their conquerors. I want Palestinians telling Palestinian stories, Sudanese telling Sudanese stories, Kashmiris telling Kashmiri stories, Yemenies telling Yemeni stories and particularly pertaining to African journalism, we need to empower our voices, we need to stop seeing outsiders as the only source of truth or logic. Its the only way forward towards our liberation. I’ve often wondered if I have any right to tell their stories being an outsider and not living under such oppression. Truth be told I probably dont, this does not mean I will be giving up on photojournalism altogether but using my knowledge to empower others to tell of their own plight. The fact that so many indigenous peoples have survived the discrimination, persecution, and genocidal campaigns launched against them is a tribute to their tenaciousness. The fact that they still have the courage to speak is even more remarkable and what better way for them to show us through the medium of photography. As photographers of colour its important that were visible within the industry, and that we’re out there telling and preserving our own stories - in our own voices. But also, of course, that we’re able to help nurture and develop the next generation of photographers to come. - Andrew Jackson #photojournalism
