I am proud to serve as a member of the newly-created Human - TopicsExpress

I am proud to serve as a member of the newly-created Human Services Board- a position to which our County Commissioners appointed me earlier this year when they decided to merge DSS and the Health Department (which disbanded those oversight boards and their power), in an attempt to gain control over them. Because I serve as legal guardian to a person who receives FNS and Medicaid, I get to represent consumers of social services. I have jumped in and served in every capacity asked of me, and I have also inserted myself in matters that interested me-- including sub-committees and many meetings outside of the monthly board meetings. I make sure that, at every turn, the voice of those served by DSS is heard by those in positions of authority, and I believe it has been nothing short of a very positive learning experience on both sides. I just starting serving a term which expires in February of 2017, and I have only missed one meeting in my short tenure (due to illness). I do not support a knee-jerk reaction to what has become a colossal county embarrassment. My fellow board members and I have amassed an extensive professional history as it relates to public health and social service issues, and we would like the opportunity to be part of a solution, especially since we are far removed from whatever systems have broken down to create the problem. The public deserves more than what theyve gotten from us, and we are committed to working through this together. Please come out and support us at the December 2nd County Commissioners meeting, as it is not a done deal until the vote.
