I am quoting a letter published in THe Hindu a couple of days back, written by my friend, Arvindar Singh, author and journalist. Sir, Mirnal Pande in her article "Rambogiri in the Year of the Flood" (The Hindu 11 July 2013)has put things in a fairly correct perspective. Modi`s claim which has been blamed on a local functionary of evacuating 15000 Gujaratis in 48 hours was rather absurd. Atleast some action should have been taken against that functionary. Venkat Goli`s reaction in (The Hindu 12 July 2013) "An Unfair Tirade Against Modi" leaves one quite perplexed. If a matter is sub-judice do we stop any debate on the issue? With that logic we cannot criticise A. Raja or Kanhimozhi on the 2G Spectrum Scam. Mirnal Pande in her rejoinder to Goli`s reaction is quite right in quoting the National Human Rights Commission Report of 2002. The Commission had not minced words on the role of the administration in turning a blind eye to miscreants who were indulging in the carnage in Gujarat. At the end of this letter I would like to quote veteran Gandhian leader and former Prime Minister Morarji Desai who made the following statement in the context of the internal emergency of 1975-77, "There is no future for a nation which suffers from fear. Material and physical comfort without human freedom is sufficient only for well fed domestic animals and birds. It is not so for men." This statement of the Gandhian leader conveys an amply clear message for those who value democratic rights and freedoms which includes the rule of law. Yours faithfully, ARVINDAR SINGH
