I am re-posting this because I want to add a statement that I think is important. First, this is a huge step for a state to take and I applaud our home state of New Jersey for taking this critical step. I want to also point out that this legislation passed both the Senate and the Assembly unanimously. However, I also want to point out one critical piece of information; the Bill states (paraphrasing): .. requires pet stores in the state to disclose to customers and municipalities the identity of breeders and brokers who supply dogs and cats to the stores. It would also block stores from acquiring animals from anyone who is not in compliance with New Jersey animal-care standards or has been cited by U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA). This IS NOT model legislation that suggests the work of the Reform Canine Breeders and Auctions group is not necessary. There exists many loopholes in the AWA and enforcement from the USDA and many states, including New Jersey, are non-existent. Again, I applaud this step, by NJ, but want all of us to remember that we have a lot of research and work ahead of us if we are going to truly make a difference in the lives of our four-legged companions.
