I am reading Popper, conjectures and refutations... A quote which I like ... he speaks first of what Socrates taught that man is free because he is self sufficient, not in need of constraint because he is able to rule himself and to accept the rule of law, and then speaks of Kant and how he felt strongly too about freedom, a deeply felt freedom, and added the idea of a community of free men, and women, of course, and that every man is free; not because he is born free, but because he is born with the burden of responsibility for free decision. I dont know about the word burden...in our use today it does not come off positively. But I think it is meant to imply the seriousness with which we perhaps need to prepare ourselves individually for the role we play in community. It needs a generous heart and educated mind, or is it educated heart and generous mind? Either way, dont you think.
