I am reminiscing today about the good old days when we believed in American exceptionalism. After reading the CIA torture report it is a little hard to see us as exceptional unless of course conducting the absolute worse torture methods counts. When I was a kid all the war movies had Japanese and Nazi villains who brutally tortured American soldiers. We hated those ugly criminals and cheered at their well-deserved deaths. But not even they tortured prisoners to death. Only we do that. The sad fact is that despite this 6,000 page report we will do nothing about these horrible crimes. It would be like prosecuting ourselves and we won’t do that. We would have to admit complicity. There is no humble acceptance of responsibility here. In fact there is chest thumping. I saw George W on the NBC nightly news claiming we should thank the torturers who did such exemplary work in our name. What next? Charles Manson as a outstanding religious leader?
