I am reposting here an answer to a quesion about the varieties of apples we sell. Red Delicious are juicy and sweet but are not that great for cooking and do not keep all winter like some apples will. Golden Delicious are juicy and sweet but not as sweet as Red. You can cook them and eat them. They cook up...Rome are hard and slightly tart and a dryer apple. Good for baking and freezing and drying and eating and cooking. Apples are like ice cream flavors. Everyone doesnt agree on which is best to eat and best to cook. Granny Smith are VERY tart and keep well. Stayman Winesap is the most popular. Tart Juicy. Good for cooking and eating if you like tart. Fuji is good for eating and has a unique flavor. Mutsu is a cross between Golden Delicious and a Japanese apple. It is sort of a super Golden Delicious. Juicy. Sweet. People who love them REALLY LOVE them. Lets see. What else. Gala is an early apple so they are all gone now. I get a few other varieties. Some of our orchards have planted new trees and we will have new varieties like Honey Crisp when the trees mature. Oh yeah. York. Good to eat and cook. I love York. They are lopsided. The skin is thick though so I like to peel them before I eat them because I dont like eating the peeling on York. Oh. Here is more info. In the mountains there was an old variety called Red Winesap. They are a small apple. Many years ago, I dont know when, someone, I think his name may have BEEN Stayman, crossed the old fashioned Red Winesap with a new variety he called Stayman. And that cross is called Stayman Winesap. So now you can still get the old Winesap but they are small. You can also get a Stayman that has nearly all or no Winesap in it. And you can get various crosses of Stayman Winesap like children get different genes from their parents. Interesting. Isnt it?
