I am saddened by today’s news from Queenstown regarding the Mount Lyell Motor Inn and Railway Hotel going into administration. My first thoughts are with the workers and their families who face an uncertain future. I have spent a number of days in Queenstown in the past few weeks and know from talking to workers and business owners that there is a real sense of urgency in responding to the region’s challenges. I am disappointed that Labor was refused a position on the West Coast Task Force to discuss its ideas for the region, including rolling out the NBN and redistributing $16 million in funding for Cadbury to an immediate relief effort. This will ensure workers are on the ground immediately, stimulating the economy. Today’s events show that action must be taken now to give Queenstown residents confidence about the town’s future. The Government must make immediate and meaningful moves to show the people of Queenstown that they do have a future and they will be supported.
