I am saddened to share that the great Christian thinker and theologian Marcus Borg has died. Many of you know Borgs work better than I, and the article below has a better summary than I could give. I will say, however, that the work that I have read always managed to be both generous and challenging - he had a way of presenting even the most controversial of ideas accessibly and without that arrogance that so often infects even the best of arguments. Whether I found myself at the end agreeing with Borgs position (and I often did) or not, I always learned something. This came, no doubt, from his deep faith and practice in a greater Love. I find this paragraph from the article below perhaps the most telling: Borg loved to debate but was no polemicist, and over the years maintained strong friendships with those who disagreed with him, developing a reputation as a gracious and generous scholar in a field and a profession that are not always known for those qualities. His insight and wisdom will be missed, but perhaps we will miss his insistence on treating those who disagreed with him as colleagues and fellow seekers most of all.
