I am seeing a lot of posts on facebook and stories on television about excessive force and violence used by police officers on citizens. Curiosity has inspired me to do a little research. I have a lot more to go but I have found out a few things. First, In the big picture of police activity, only about 9% of all police reports produce a citizen complaint (U.S. Records on State and County Pollice Reports, 2009 to 2014). On average, the percentage of police shootings on citizens and complaints of police brutality are relatively low with complaints up to 4% higher in some cities. I havent crunched the numbers yet. I am getting numbers on police records that are open to the public nation wide. I am a minority. I am half white but my skin color and my middle and last name has made everyone consider me to be a minority. Personally, I have been pulled over by police AT LEAST A HUNDRED TIMES IN MY LIFE IN 12 DIFFERENT STATES. I have only had one single incident in my life when a police officer seemed rude or over the top with me. I am not saying that excessive force or police brutality is not a problem. I am saying that the problem appears to be much bigger in social media and in the news than it really is. I have a lot more numbers to see but so far, it looks like a problem that is relatively rare. I am one who is a big supporter of law enforcement. I happen to think that the Orange County Sheriffs Department and the L.A. County Sheriffs Department do an outstanding job. I am a lifetime resident of Orange here in California and I would put our police department up against any in America. I know a ton of cops and sheriffs and it is my opinion that most of them do a great job......not just a good job. These guys put their lives on the line every time they go on duty. I am in favor of catching and prosecuting any officer of the law who is dirty or engages in police brutality or uses excessive force. However, I am of the staunch belief that, for the most part, officers of the law do a great job. I dont want to see the whole profession get a black eye because of the awful actions of a few bad officers.
