I am so excited to be back in the district and able to attend events like the following. I hope you will join me to honor the memory of Jonathon Scott Bennett. Concert first benefit for Bennett scholarship fund By Lisa Boykin Batts | Times Life Editor Soprano Elizabeth Winstead and pianist Casey Whaley will give a concert Friday night as the first event to benefit the Jonathon S. Bennett Scholarship Fund. The endowment concert starts at 7 p.m. at First Christian Church. Bennett, a 2010 graduate of Fike High School, was a junior at East Carolina University when he died in an accident in April. His family plans to establish a permanent scholarship in his memory with the N.C. Community Foundation when the required minimum of $25,000 is reached. "The Jonathon Scott Bennett Scholarship will call for applicants who demonstrate significant achievement in academic scholarship, athletics and music. Consideration will be given to students who actively serve their school and their community as Jonathon did,” his mother, Rita Bennett, wrote in a news release. Bennett participated in numerous ACT! for Youth and Playhouse of Wilson productions, played trumpet in the Starlight Dance Band and percussion in the Tar River Children’s Chorus and sang with the Wilson Chorale. At Fike, he was in the Student Government Association, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and was co-captain of the junior varsity boy’s basketball team. He was president of the Fike Chorus and National Honor Society and bass section leader for the 2008 N.C. Governor’s School East Concert. He also ran track and sang with the N.C. Honors Chorus all four years of high school. Whaley said Friday’s concert is an array of music from classical to Broadway. The concert is personal for Winstead. Bennett was one of her voice students for several years, and she said she is grateful to have the opportunity to do something that honors his memory. "He was such a talented young man, one of those kids who was good at everything,” she said. "I loved working with him. He had a cheeky sense of humor, always laughing and smiling. And such great energy.” Friends please come to the concert Friday night or contribute to this wonderful cause. Make it a great day
