I am so happy to be posting our first artist Katie Diana Grinsted from Nelson. I will let Katie introduce herself, her wonderful art and her passion for conservation. Enjoy. Art and conservation influence all aspects of my life. My knowledge and awareness of conservation and the interconnected world shape how I live my life. I use my creativity through visual art and storytelling to communicate this awareness, particularly in my role as a primary school teacher. To date, I have written and illustrated three books – A Hauturu How To Do about Hihi monitoring on Little Barrier Island, and The Cruisers of Sunday Island about weeding on Raoul Island. My third book Little Toutouwai Finds Some Food is a children’s story. I feel most inspired to create when I am ‘out there’, in the natural world. There is nothing like a good bush walk or a slow weeding crawl to gather ideas, and a good cup of tea in a hut or tent to write it down. A highlight in my conservation career came just a few months ago in the form of an email from a parent of one of my former pupils. Her child, now at secondary school, was busy GPS tracking her neighbourhood cats. The parent said, “It’s all your fault you know! Black ink pen, white paper, and a little watercolour paint set gifted to me by a friend, have become my medium of choice. If people would like to buy copies of her books they can email Katie: mabelblack31@gmail
