I am so happy to let everyone know that the “Meg Soles of Love” structure went up in Hopkinton, MA today! Due to the post-bombing security restrictions around this year’s race, we were told we could not put the structure right at the start line. The good news is that we found an amazing spot at the 1 mile mark where there is an iconic marathon statue called “The Spirit of The Marathon.” Those who have run Boston will know that the one mile mark is at the top of the first hill runners encounter on their 26.2 mile journey to Boston. The statue celebrates the achievement of 1946 famed Greek runner Stylianos Kyriakies. From everything I have heard about Meg, it seems like she too embodies the spirit of the Boston Marathon, so it’s only fitting that her structure stands as tall as the statue itself. I hope Meg’s family knows that she was the spark that ignited the love that fuels the #megsmiles movement. She has touched many hearts around the world and she is a constant beacon who reminds us all to run safe. I want to thank everyone who sent running shoes for the structure. We had 388 pair of running shoes to work with and the shoes came from all over the world. The structure was chosen to accommodate additional shoes between now and Marathon Monday. If you wish to add a pair of shoes yourself, you can Google Map the location which is on the corner of Peach Street and Route 135. I would like to send a booming shout out to Weston Nurseries Garden Center who not only allowed us to put the structure on their property, but who also provided the material and labor for the structure’s base.
