I am so proud of the amazing voluntary work that my great friend (Donegal musician and songwriter) John Cutliffe is doing in visiting hospitals in Gaza, bringing things in for and comforting the wounded. The children caught up in this horrendous situation have understandably made a major impact on John – knowing this hugely caring, warm and considerate man, with his infectious grin and playful, childlike sense of humour, it was so heartening (but not altogether surprising) to hear that he was the person to make a little 4 year old girl called ‘Shyma’ smile for the first time after she had lost most of her family in the explosion which injured her. This smile has inspired John to go on to write a song and release it to raise funds for two charities that are helping injured children in the war torn area. Here’s the finished product – the beautiful song ‘Shyma Smiled for Me’ co-written by John Cutliffe and Rory Gallagher, featuring a host of brilliant musicians (including Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, Liam ó Maonlaí, Martin Tourish, Donogh Hennessy, children’s choirs from Donegal and Jerusalem and more). The song and video are powerful, have a look/ listen here and then PLEASE go on to buy the song at any of the online stores (which I will paste below). John – you’re a superstar!! Kx
