I am so thankful that I have had the privilege to meet amazing activists in USAC. Entering UCLA I had a very narrow mind and believed that I should only concern myself and my student government with issues that directly affect me. I had few opinions about things political or global because I was apathetic of my ability to make change- the problems are too big, beyond me, out of my reach. The very wise and inspiring people Ive met in the USAC Office of the President have liberated me from that oppressive mentality. We as UCLA students are very privileged- we are educated and very visible. If we cannot feel empowered to make change, who will? As Chancellor Block suggests, If we cannot have productive discussions here, on a campus with the world’s thought leaders and with students committed to knowledge and inquiry, then where can we? Exactly. Criticizing the desire for people to affect change outside of their immediate issues perpetuates ignorance. I am so sorry that even at UCLA students face intimidation from their own peers for attempting to start these discussions. I am so grateful that there are members of our USAC council like John Joanino, Maryssa Hall, and Lizzy Naameh who empower students by reminding us that we really are the worlds thought leaders and that our issues and opinions matter. If not here, then where?
