I am somewhat saddened to hear this news of a couple that generously hosted me when I first reached California about 2 years ago (and left me shortly after!). Not saddened out of a lack of acceptance, but simply because it is a natural reaction to separation. With separation there is always pain, and it saddens me that my dear brother Aatif Abdul-Qadeer and my sister Yasmin Mogahed will have to undergo the pain of separation. However, Allah (SWT) promised to insert peace within the pain, before the pain, and after the pain, and so I am confident that the Guarantee of the Almighty will manifest itself in their stories inshaAllah. Allah (SWT) has a message for every person involved in any circumstance; a message to the observer and a message to those involved. Unfortunately when someone is in the public eye, the observer tries to interpret the message of those involved and the involved may also try to interpret the message that is meant for the observer. In short, let each one interpret their own message and refrain from trying to understand the message of the other. Some possible things to take away from this as an observer: -Advice comes with its conditions, and if you are an observer on Facebook you are far from eligible to be giving advice. Believe me. -The posting of this in no way endorses the idea of getting a divorce at the first sight of difference. -The posting of this actually endorses the idea of being civil and compassionate even when separation is the only viable option, after trying everything else. -Usually in a circumstance like this, the separation can become extremely ugly (Ive seen situations like this become bloody before). With that in mind, seeing two Muslim leaders engage (or disengage :-), remember Sh Mokhtars class!) with mercy and Rifq even in divorce is commendable to say the least. May Allah (SWT) bless you both, and as always, you both are in my duaa. You both are welcome to Chicago anytime so you can consider us for a potential location for one your future seminars inshaAllah. :-) -AbuAdnan
