I am spending a lazy Saturday weathering the last rains of the typhoon that is passing through the Visayas by watching YouTube. I thought I had seen all of Lee Marvin’s movies but I had not. Today I watched “Hell in the Pacific” a tale about a Marine Corps aviator (Lee Marvin) and an Imperial Japanese Naval aviator (Toshirō Mifune). It has little dialogue and half in Japanese, but while is not what one might call a truly great movie it is a good watch about. The two pilots end up on the same desolate South Pacific island and the movie illustrates their struggle for survival against starvation, thirst, the elements and one another. Although the movie has a somewhat dumb ending it was still very enjoyable. Perhaps I am prejudiced as Lee Marvin was one of my favorite American actors and Toshirō Mifune was my absolute Japanese actor. Toshirō Mifune achieved pretty good success in America appearing in numerous movies. You may remember him with Richard Chamberlain and John Rhys-Davies in what I considered a great Mini Series “Shogun” on the movies “Red Sun” with Charles Bronson and Ursalla Andress or Midway. But he was a super star in Japan including owning his own production studio and his Japanese movies are my favorites. My particular favorites of include his series about Musashi the most famous Samurai of all time and a hero in Japan; my other favorite is “Red Beard” a most excellent movie about the lesson in sacrifice, service and duty a young Doctor learns a sacrificially giving Doctor (Toshirō Mifune) in Warlord Japan. (Available from NetFlix) The first picture is from Red Beard, the next is a promo for Shogun, followed by two from “Hell in the Pacific” and the remaining are in his roles as Musashi and a promo for one of the Musashi movies.
