I am starting a charity with some fantastic people. Its called Spotlight YOPD as it will raise awareness of and give support to people diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinsons disease; a group more often than not merely given a life changing diagnosis that they have a chronic neurologically degenerative brain disease and little else. You see most people and other charities we could name seem to reinforce the view that Parkinsons is and old persons disease when in fact you can get it at any age - the youngest was just 9 years old!! Depression, rage, fear and confusion abound and most dont know who to turn to or what they can do to help themselves and manage their disease, let alone fight their corner. This is a situation that I and many others with YOPD have encountered and it doesnt stop with the diagnosis. This is for life or until we find a cure (but the latter is the job of the Cure Parkinsons Trust - who are a separate charity but we will be working with them and giving the CPT any funds we have over and above those needed to provide the website and fulfil the obligations of Spotlight YOPD). The idea is simple. I am giving my time and energies to this soon to be registered charity FOR FREE and hopefully we can bring information, support, hope through a sense that diagnosis is not the end.
