I am starting a new adventure in nursing today in a direction that I never imagined Id be heading. Tomorrow I start my training for Ideal Image in Tampa, FL then will be working full time in winston salem. For my entire career I have been a Medical and Surgical ICU nurse. For about 4 and a half years I helped save countless lives and got to experience the intense and rewarding gratitude of someone who comes back to visit the hospital just to shake your hand and thank you for literally keeping their heart pumping. Countless times, Ive been the nurse who had to physically press the button to turn off life saving medications that were keeping a patients heart beating, and allow a patient to pass because there was nothing left to offer and their family wanted them to pass in peace and in dignity. Countless times I was also the nurse that had to provide comfort and find the right words ... or just be able to stand in silence for the moms, dads, sisters, brothers, and children of the patients that passed. I have seen the best people get dealt the worst hands in life. Ive struggled with my faith, only to end up with a stronger faith because I knew I was supposed to be right there and then to care for those patients and families. It was not all sad, thanks to the AMAZING coworkers Ive had. Also the amazing families and patients that you meet along the way who are the reason we ICU nurses roll out of bed at 5 am to face a 12-14 hour day. We helped people through their worst times of their lives and we got a lot of them BETTER! I am also thankful for being able to work at two of the tip top hospitals in the nation: Duke and Wake forest Baptist . But, that all begins to wear on you eventually. I have so much respect for the nurses who have been at the bedside for 10, 20, 30+ years. I made the decision to help people in a totally different way and I am so excited to get started!! Thank you especially to my husband Collin Backus for supporting me in EVERYTHING I do! And of course my family :) What a wonderful profession nursing is! So many different ways you can go. Wish me luck!!!
