I am still amazed by how easily and how generously Americans greet each other. Especially here, in Montana. Whether in the downtown area or in the park, people would either smile and nod to you or say how ya doin’ or both. Even through, you’re a complete stranger to them! As a Ukrainian, I am just not used to this type of friendliness. Usually, in Ukraine people would either walk right by you indifferently, or glower at you. Ordinarily, no one smiles or says hello to each other over there (especially, Eastern Ukraine) unless you are good friends. Of course, the situation is very different in the church. Here the atmosphere is warm and friendly; Christian folks are very cordial and supportive. But, in general, the disposition toward each other in the Ukrainian society is quite dour and sullen. I only hope it’ll change in future.
