Josse de Baenst had to promise the Duke of Saxony, before which he would not grant him the nomination to the bailliery of Bruges, to reduce the value of the money by one third. He could not achieve his goal, but gained the town of Damme in the company of the aldermen Mathieu de Brouckere and François Ridtsaert. Albert of Saxony did not delay in securing his replacement and appointed Corneille Metteneye by letters patent on the 7th May 1490. The admittance of Metteneye suffered difficulties abroad, but if one feared that Albert would not put his threats into action, one had only to wait until the 17th following. Later the matter complicated itself significantly: The citizens of Bruges refused anew the reduction by one third of the value of their money, and would see the bailliff Metteneye out of the town, who left and went to Damme, but came back somewhat later at the head of a band of German men, ravaging the environs of Bruges, and prevented the revictualling of that place. Now began a long series of troubles that desolated the town of Bruges during the second part of 1490, and which delivered a deadly blow to its commerce and prosperity.
