I am surprised that we had to do a study on this. Fire from the beginning of time has been known to be the rejuvenating factor in our ecosystem. In fact that is why the USFS performs prescribed burns which also have negative effects on the atmosphere as well as liability regarding smoke/visibility. We have become so good at fire suppression that we are losing many different species of vegetation and setting ourselves up for more devastating wildfires that result in loss of life and infrastructure. We should not be looking into ways to suppress fire. This is just basic common sense. We should be inventing ways to benignly reduce hazardous fuel buildup to enhance regrowth and reduce uncontrollable wildfires protecting urban interface areas for reduction of life loss and infrastructure. We should turn to Australia as an example for a short-term fix where land owners are held responsible for removing hazardous fuel build up from their property. I guess the US needs to look at who owns our 750 million acres of forest land would be to push the responsibility on owners temporarily. Long-term goal should be to invest in funding universities in developing a solution that would benignly breakdown hazardous fuel at a cost effective price; thereby eliminating the smoke factor liability and environmental impact and simultaneously reducing wildfire risk maintaining our ecosystem. web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2013/forest-fire-management-1120.html
