I am surrounded by Progressives, Liberals, Brits, Haters of the West, Haters of The USA, and then theres the locals. Climate Change to Secular Humanists is a fact. I disagree with the methods and political agenda of those that are driving this issue. So... Core measurements and satellite data show that the polar ice caps (arctic and antarctic) are expanding, not shrinking. The Australians recently published an article on the fact that the antarctic ice cap is growing: ICE is expanding in much of Antarctica, contrary to the widespread public belief that global warming is melting the continental ice cap. . . . Ice core drilling in the fast ice off Australia’s Davis Station in East Antarctica by the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Co-Operative Research Centre shows that last year, the ice had a maximum thickness of 1.89m, its densest in 10 years. The average thickness of the ice at Davis since the 1950s is 1.67m. A paper published by the British Antarctic Survey in the journal Geophysical Research Letters confirmed that over the past 30 years, the area of sea ice around the continent has expanded. (Antarctic Ice is Growing, Not Melting Away, news.au/story/0,27574...57-401,00.html) Dr. Ian Allison of the Australian Antarctic Division Glaciology Program rejects alarmist claims about ice-cap melting:: Dr Allison said there was not any evidence of significant change in the mass of ice shelves in east Antarctica nor any indication that its ice cap was melting. The only significant calvings in Antarctica have been in the west, he said. And he cautioned that calvings of the magnitude seen recently in west Antarctica might not be unusual. Ice shelves in general have episodic carvings and there can be large icebergs breaking off - Im talking 100km or 200km long - every 10 or 20 or 50 years. . (Antarctic Ice is Growing, Not Melting Away, news.au/story/0,27574...57-401,00.html) The North Pole ice cap (arctic) is not melting away either. In fact, the arctic ice cap grew by 9% from 2007 to 2008: We have news from the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC). They say: The melt is over. And we’ve added 9.4% ice coverage from this time last year. Though it appears NSIDC is attempting to downplay this in their web page announcement today, one can safely say that despite irrational predictions seen earlier this year, we didn’t reach an “ice free north pole” nor a new record low for sea ice extent. (Arctic Sea Ice Melt Season Officially Over; Ice Up Over 9% from Last Year m4gw:2005/m4gw/2008/0...s_growing.html) The above article includes an overlay map of the North Pole ice cap that shows the ice cap in 2007 and then in 2008. Notice that the 2008 ice cap is larger than the 2007 one. Over 100 scientists recently sent an open letter to President Obama disputing global warming. These scientists include climate experts from the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Kansas, the University of Delaware, the University of Ottawa, and MIT. They also include the former director of the New Zealand Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, the former editor of the journal Climate Research, and a former Reviewer of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Heres what those scientists said in their open letter: We, the undersigned scientists, maintain that the case for alarm regarding climate change is grossly overstated. Surface temperature changes over the past century have been episodic and modest and there has been no net global warming for over a decade now. After controlling for population growth and property values, there has been no increase in damages from severe weather-related events. The computer models forecasting rapid temperature change abjectly fail to explain recent climate behavior. Mr. President, your characterization of the scientific facts regarding climate change and the degree of certainty informing the scientific debate is simply incorrect. (cato.org/special/climatec...to_climate.pdf) Dr. Fred Singer, who holds a Ph.D. in physics from Princeton and is a former director of the U.S. Weather Satellite Service and the Center for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Maryland, has said the following about global warming: There is no proof that the current warming is caused by the rise of greenhouse gases from human activity. Ice core records from the past 650,000 years show that temperature increases have preceded—not resulted from—increases in CO2 by hundreds of years, suggesting that the warming of the oceans is an important source of the rise in atmospheric CO2. As the dominant greenhouse gas, water vapor is far, far more important than CO2. Dire predictions of future warming are based almost entirely on computer climate models, yet these models do not accurately understand the role or water vapor—and, in any case, water vapor is not within our control. Plus, computer models cannot account for the observed cooling of much of the past century (1940–75), nor for the observed patterns of warming—what we call the “fingerprints.” For example, the Antarctic is cooling while models predict warming. And where the models call for the middle atmosphere to warm faster than the surface, the observations show the exact opposite. The best evidence supporting natural causes of temperature fluctuations are the changes in cloudiness, which correspond strongly with regular variations in solar activity. The current warming is likely part of a natural cycle of climate warming and cooling that’s been traced back almost a million years. It accounts for the Medieval Warm Period around 1100 A.D., when the Vikings settled Greenland and grew crops, and the Little Ice Age, from about 1400 to 1850 A.D., which brought severe winters and cold summers to Europe, with failed harvests, starvation, disease, and general misery. Attempts have been made to claim that the current warming is “unusual” using spurious analysis of tree rings and other proxy data. Advocates have tried to deny the existence of these historic climate swings and claim that the current warming is unusual by using spurious analysis of tree rings and other proxy data, resulting in the famous “hockey–stick” temperature graph. The hockey-stick graph has now been thoroughly discredited. (The Great Global Warming Swindle, Independent Institute, independent.org/newsroom/article.asp?id=1945) Global warming is a myth being peddled by left-wing scientists and liberals who want to use it as an excuse to impose more government controls on our economy and to push through income-redistribution schemes masked as energy and/or climate bills (such as the horrendous cap-and-trade bill that the Dems have tried to ram through Congress).
