I am thinking this morning of approaching the devil for a deal. I wonder what I could give to have Dwight David Eisenhower back. Right now. *** Maybe its only because he is the earliest president that I personally remember. I dont think thats it. I have been observing for about 40 years, and I have been listening for 75 minutes to historians, military experts, but most significantly, a couple of once very young warriors (a private from the D-Day beaches and a corporal who parachuted into the Normandy countryside behind) who are now wise, articulate, and old. (Consider for a moment the maturity of our 20-year-olds.) *** Eisenhower, with his qualities and abilities, may have been the only individual who could have planned and executed D-Day. Reportedly, he never publicly celebrated D-Day, because he forever felt the weight of having planned and ordered the extreme sacrifices of so many others. For him, it was forever to be their day. And let us remember, Eisenhower was a warrior who had the foresight to warn us of a military-industrial complex. *** Let us study and understand. Let us remember. Let us pull together.
