“I am trying to get somewhere” Just watched TobyMac’s (I don’t wanna) Lose My Soul and it made me reflect on urban life and ministry. I cried a little, too. See, as suburbanites and those of us living in exurban communities, we hear from our pulpits: “So what are you giving up for your soul? What are you doing to ‘gain the whole world’ but are willing to give your whole soul?” As Toby and Kirk Franklin sang and performed in the video I asked this very question; then, realized, this is not the question for many living in center-cities, in poverty sections of our urban cities. There they reflect: “I can never have the whole world” only what I can grasp, hustle, and take and in that grasping I give up nothing for my soul is not worth saving. I give up nothing to gain what little turf I can take.” As long as we continue convincing those living with the effects of poverty that their souls are worth far less than other souls (our souls, the suburban and exurban soul), we will continue to have hurt, violence, and the grasping of small worlds at deadly costly our urban children for future generations to come. The Mark text from which this song comes is turned on the affluent, the well off, those living outside urban centers: what part of your soul are you giving up to keep what you have plenty of? (Enough already!) What are you willing to give up for the souls of children in urban centers, so they can gain the whole world? https://youtube/watch?v=coHKdhAZ9hU
