I am trying to understand the American hero fetish. From Hollywood superstars to Washington can-not-dos there is an acceptable and encouraged culture of criticism and commentary. However there is one hypersensitive taboo: the U.S. military. Any criticism is seen as unpatriotic and destructive. Frankly, I respect those who serve in the military just as I respect those whom serve in law enforcement, emergency and nonemergency medical, education, and among others. i understand the pride. I understand the support. So why, when anyone offers anything less than complete support for the military are they met with antagonism, anger, and prejudice?
