I am usually in sync with Photoshelter, but this advice is a little disconcerting to me. From an article on the continuing folly of FB logorithms. 1) Be more relevant. Because Facebook uses an algorithm, what the platform considers relevant will always be changing. Not helpful. But, there are some basic guidelines to follow here. First is to know your audience and talk like they do. Post what they like (follow some of them on Facebook to see what kinds of topics, brands and news items they like). If you’re a wedding photographer who also does corporate work, don’t post about both. More then likely you have two different target audiences for your types of work, and sending mixed messages to Facebook’s algorithm will not work in your favor. It seems to me that they are saying follow the crowd - do what the other guys are doing. Be part of the massive flood of crap that seeks the lowest common denominator in order to build huge traffic. Not a good plan in my opinion. First of all, if your plan is to build a massive traffic plan, what is your core business - and how does massive traffic fit into that plan? Having a lot of people visit your site so they can get another regurgitated view of a vaguely interesting article that has the word camera in it is great if you are monetizing your blog with advertising. If you are looking for assignments, well... pulling in ten thousand people who want to see what Joe keeps in his camera bag may NOT be the way to go. There will always be those for whom popularity is a numbers game. And those for whom popularity is almost a badge of worthiness and esteem. But for me popular is not as interesting as... well, interesting. Popular may sell e-books and cool little actions, but interesting sells assignment photography. Be relevant, sure... if it is authentic relevance. But be interesting, absolutely.
