I am very close to a family with three young boys of mixed race. I found out that one of them was told by his friend (I use this term loosely at this point) that he cant talk to him because he is black. I am very shocked that this still happens today. Children are not born with hatred in their hearts, they are taught by their parents. I was even more appalled when I found out the father (I may use this term loosely as well at this point) is on one of our local fire departments, as are the grandparents. I wonder as a firefighter/EMT how you treat a patient that is black with your attitude of intolerance. And should a black firefighter/EMT treat you with less care since you have these feelings? My hope for this father is that he never be in a tragic accident and need a blood transfusion or an organ because they may very well come from a black individual. They dont separate them in a cooler by race. How can any man today be this intolerant of another human being, it is even more disgusting when you drag a school age child into it. This child may or may not understand the ramifications of what his father told him. Children are innocent and as a parent we should remember and protect this. Thankfully the child this was said to is a brave young man and knows people can be cruel, because he is being raised to love people and understand ignorance. Our local fire department should be ashamed to have this individual in a place of serving others. I would be fearful of the care and concern they would provide to those they wont allow their children to talk to. And considering what I know but will not lower myself to share there is no room for judging others from this person. Appalling.
