I am very sad today to learn of the passing of a friend and mentor, Jim Cunningham. He was instrumental in founding the COSA program. His example was very influential to me in choosing community organizing as a career, and pursuing my degree at Pitt. I truly hope one day to be able to set up a scholarship fund in his name for those of us specializing in straight community organizing. I deeply regret not being able to garner his wisdom on the eve of my graduation and faced with such a mountain of student debt. Most importantly, how such debt affects the mission-oriented aspects of this profession; will I be able to manifest my goals and ideals in light of the pressures to compromise my efficacy to bring about the most urgent changes we need in our Pittsburgh communities? I encourage all of us in the MSW program to learn about his work, and if a memorial service is offered, to attend. He was an uncompromising and intelligent fighter for justice and the rights of all peoples, and his wisdom and joy for life will be dearly missed.
