I am watching a UK show about pickpockets and shoplifters and besides being amazed that the police do not carry guns and the fact that there are cameras all over the place, is the fact that these criminals get such light sentences. A guy steals $300 of perfume with a warning, a woman takes $2,000 worth of goods from multiple shops and gets 180 hours of public service, a serial pickpocket receives the harshest sentence at 14 weeks and ends up serving 8. The police and the pickpockets joke with each other, mostly everyone is treated with respect and dignity and the idea that oh well, its petty crime. No one gets hurt.
