I am watching the debate in London showing on BBC on the topic, Democracy is not always the best form of government. This is one of the debate propositions that all of us who went to school were required to participate in a debating subject. The economic rise of China, generally thought to be a non-democratic country, pushes this topic back to the forefront of our consciousness. Democracy is not static as a concept and in reality. We hear others saying that a certain country is more democratic than another, and that is correct; because democracy comes in many degrees. In essence, democracy is a form of government in which its citizens retain rights, including the right to participate in the running of the government directly or through representatives that they elect. A country that gives wide array of rights to its citizens is more democratic than another country that gives its citizens lesser rights. A country that gives its citizens no rights at all can be said to be non-democratic. We often distinguish democracy from communism, and that would be the proverbial comparison between apples and oranges. Even among communist countries there is democratic component to them; thus, we would hear people saying that China is more democratic than North Korea. Back to the topic, whether or not democracy is not always the best form of government is a heavily loaded topic, and that is because of the word always. Personally, I am in favor of democracy, but it would be erroneous to assert that democracy is always the best form of government.
