I am whole and complex. And so many of us are. So many of us who you might try to fit under your microscope and analyse, to tear apart and yet fail to understand. So many of us who you decide to keep or burn or ignore as your conscience sees fit. Our bodies stolen from the earth and returned in toxic forms. So many of us lying by the side of the road, knocked down by your machines in the night and left for dead. So many of us who you call ‘waves’ and ‘floods’, but who are really people, looking for a new home. So many of us on other sides, calling to the morning and bringing the sun back into existence. So many of us, our services for rent, but not our minds. Standing in shop windows, selling our wares to passers by who might see us for who we are, or might see us as flesh alone. As do those who take it upon themselves to ‘save’ us against our will. So many of us, just blank sheets hanging, waiting for you to project your movie onto us. So many of us, our naked acts recorded and passed from technology to technology. Our real stories lost and obscured by the shadow of your fantasies. So many of us, our teeth bared against all this destruction. Our bodies ready to fight to protect those dear to us. So many of us, who you interrupt, speak for and patronise rather than hear our straining voices. So many of us, our bodies buried for years uncountable before you extracted us, ignited us and pumped us into the atmosphere. So many of us, afraid to walk alone at night. Our queered bodies, from another existence, alert to every menacing shadow. So many of us, our leaves breathing and giving you life. Our colours inspiring the art that makes you millions while we whither and die in your backyard. So many of us, words, gifts and memories.
